p.s If like me you are doing ‘Secret Santa’ at work, IWOOT is great for silly gifts and gadgets for girls and boys for under £5 or £10 depending on your budget!
Outside Pakistan’s Army battled the Taliban, inside Karachi’s top designers defied the religious extremists by dressing models in modern ‘non-Islamic’ pieces that could cost lives.
With shoulders, backs and belly buttons exposed, a little flesh on show probably wouldn’t raise a western eyebrow these days, but in a country where women are forced to cover up for fear of death by stoning, it was a groundbreaking show for all involved.
Sonya Battla, the first designer to send her creations down the catwalk said her designs celebrated strong women and that “I’m a very brave woman and I’m not going to be scared and no one’s going to judge me.”
The fashion show was an escape, a time for everyone to grasp a little respite a midst a time where senseless killings in universities, police stations and markets are daily happenings. “Life has to go on” said Samar Mehdi, a designer who studied at Bristol University “And this is a way to tell the people want our lives to stop that ‘No, we won’t let you.’”
It is humbling to think that the biggest challenges most fashion shows face are wardrobe malfunctions, lighting issues and over-doing the canapés- but in some places models and designers face persecution and death for simply showing clothes that we consider every woman has a right to feel fabulous in, such as a strapless dress or sheer top.
It also shows that there is nothing shallow about an industry that produces revolutionaries who are as brave and willing to risk their lives as soldiers. Some may argue that clothes do not make the man or woman, but when they are used as a weapon to oppress there is nothing more important in the world than taking back that power in any way possible.
So sorry for the lack of posting lately but I have been very poorly. Sniff sniff.
I am on the mend now though and what better way to spend a duvet day than to whip out the laptop and get blogging?! …Except for maybe yesterday when I watched The Wizard of Oz followed by The Aristocats!
So put the kettle on (one sugar please) and watch this space!
Well it’s been a while, but here are a few things that I think are better than sliced bread at the moment…
♥ Levi Johnston is karma incarnate and he just gets better and better! He will be posing fully naked (oh yes…) for Playgirl on November 16th…the same day Sarah ‘Satan’ Palin spouts her bile on Oprah. LOVE HIM!!!
♥Christina Aguilera’s shoe collection was displayed in it’s full, very organised glory in this month’s Instyle. Her house is just a grotto of glittering, decadent fabulousness; I just don’t know how her husband and son fit in to it- it’s one big girly boudoir!
♥ I bought a silky black slip with lace edging and just love grunging it up with a big chunky jumper, leggings, leg warmers and biker boots now that winter is upon us.
♥ This place needs no introductions- The Tea Cosy. Every fag and hag’s Mecca. Even the Mayor of Brighton turns out for their Diana tribute event.
♥ I am still in love with Conor Oberst. Especially when I watch this video.
I have never quite got over the fact that Glambert didn’t win American Idol and his debut release further enforces the fact that America and the rest of the world was robbed of the deity that is Adam Erber Anslem Mitchel Woodly (feel free to insert any other made up middle names that Wikipedia offers you!) Lambert.
So the Liz Earle skin care kit didn’t work out for me- I was allergic to one or more of the ingredients which was tres disappointing and I needed an alternative…
I had seen Avène products in Boots but never really considered myself to have sensitive skin until I had serious symptoms over the past couple of months.
The description I found when reserching the brand was “Eau Thermale Avène is a unique range dedicated to providing products for sensitive, intolerant and allergy prone skin” which pretty much sums up my fussy face to a tea, so I thought ‘here goes nuthin’ and ordered up!
So I since yesterday my new routine consists of…
1. Washingface and neck withCleanance™ Soapless Gel Cleanser.
2. Removing any traces left behind with Cleanance™ Anti-Shine Regulating Lotionpaying extra attention to the T-Zone.
3. Moisturising face andneck with Cleanance Purifying Anti-shine Lotion.
4. Topping it off with a little Cleanance™ Kon problem areas such as forehead nose and chin.
It is obviously very early days yet, but I can say that my skin felt smooth and comfortable after first use last night- no stinging or redness at all.
This morning a blemish I had on my cheek is much smaller and less inflamed (but that may have been the Aspirin I put on it last night!)
Usually my forehead looks very shiny by about mid day and I have to blot a lot (almost every hour) but today I had no oily patches until about 4pm, when I was tired and had been sitting in front of a computer screen with central heating on all day.
So, I will give you an update in a couple of weeks to let you know if Avène works the magic it promises for me!
♥Have Yourself A Precious Little Christmas- How beautiful are these?! You know how much I love baroque, especially silver and black! My GHD’s have lasted a good few years but are held together mainly by duct tape and pixie dust now so these have to be top of my list this year, please Santa!
♥ This piece of kit… but at £4,489… I don’t know if Santa’s budget will stretch that far!
In a season where many designers stick to the safe and warm confines of tweed, wool and other heavy fabrics in equally heavy tones, Galliano’s collection for the house of Dior was like an injection of summer sorbet to our dark little world!
The tulle, silk, satin and lace in shades of acid green, pink and orange could warm up any winter night, combined with the light-hearted retro cuts the collection captures the chic but fun vibe of Dior, as always. It seems that the name that brought us through the war in style can be relied upon to raise morale in the recession also.
Galliano joked backstage to Anabel Cutler of InStyle that the idea behind the strangely composed outfits was to pay homage to Christian Dior’s flustered models of the 50s who had to walk in various states of undress after a hurried curtain-call; some with their petticoats, corsets and suspenders on display!
"I'ma hold you down until you're amazed, give it to you til you're screaming my name" Glambert's back and durty as ever, love it...
